Does anyone know, are RHWO numbers declining or is it coincidental? Until this past weekend at Wastewater, I hadn't taken one in at least two years. Seems like 5-10 years ago, I took them fairly regularly.
Their numbers are certainly declining. When I was a kid they were the common woodpecker in the city. There are probably lots of reasons; one I've heard is that starlings have taken over most of the natural nesting holes previously used by RHWO.
I was talking with a friend recently and he reported several sightings at Camp Pendalouan. I haven't verified the sightings myself but I know in the past, when I visited, it seemed like there were always several around the main part of the campground.
