That's really interesting. Are you on Facebook? I post pictures to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's page. People love to i.d. birds on there. What's interesting is that a friend of mine posted a picture of a very funky bird he saw in his yard last month in Muskegon. The pictures weren't as clear as this, and the closest thing I could suggest was a Spruce Grouse, which are present in Michigan. He seemed to think it matched the Brown-eared Pheasant, which does not belong here at all. Maybe escapees from a private collector?

Mi DNR released Sichuan Pheasants in 1985 that looked like this bird.
