I just found this site while searching for some information on birds here in Muskegon. That being said, first and foremost, thank you for all that you are doing in our community concerning the beautiful nature here!
I'm trying to figure out what type of large bird is living in the wooded area behind my house, and as much as I admire birds, unfortunately I do not know much about them. ;)
After a fairly brief preliminary internet search, I presume it is either a broad-winged hawk or golden eagle. Last year I saw him nearly catch an adult rabbit. He appears to have at least a 6-foot wingspan and is in a nest make of sticks in a tree about 60-70' from the ground.
He is a brilliant animal! He is living in the wooded area on the south side of Knoll's employee parking lot in Norton Shores.
Just out of curiosity, given his larger size, what are the chances of him being a golden eagle in your opinions?
Broad-winged Hawks are much smaller and just arriving in Michigan at this time; Golden Eagles don't breed here. By size your bird sounds like a Bald Eagle, by behavior perhaps a Northern Goshawk (?) though the wingspan would not be six feet.
