Food Fight and Channel Is Freezing Over!

I spent 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Channel today. I watched this Red-breasted Merganser food-fight.

The channel is mostly frozen over.  There is some open water on the south side and a little on the north side.  If tonight is as cold as last night, it might be frozen over completely by morning.

Several days ago the local Fox weatherman said Lake Michigsn was frozen to beyond ten miles from shore. Yesterday on NPR I heard that Lake Michigan was 63% ice-covered. Winds have been generally westerly, so the ice might extend well beyond ten miles by now. Any guesses where the thousands of ducks will go if the Channel freezes over? There's a report today of a White-winged Scoter in the Grand River near Ionia County. I wonder if the deep-water species would head for flowing waters of the Muskegon, White and Grand Rivers which are all probably closer than the open waters of the Big Lake. Thoughts, anyone?
