Casey, thanks for the photo. I emailed you my guess as to the species of this hawk. Let's see what others might say. Mike, your cicada does indeed look freshly minted! Thanks! I had two exited-skeletons on my shed last week, but saw neither of the cicadas that left them there.
Casey, I just posted your photo of the Red-tailed Hawk. It's always gratifying to have a guess be correct, but I wasn't positive about redtail until you sent your other photos. One of the things that bothered me initially in this photo was the extreme thinness (like an accipiter, almost sharp-shin thin) of what looked like the left leg. On closer inspection that appeared to be just a twig. At any rate, thanks for the definitive answer!
