Somebody is stockpiling food at the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve; this scaup was left on top of a broken dead tree. - Carol Cooper
Carol, thanks for the interesting photo. If anyone suspects a particular raptor or other predator or has opinions about this, please leave a comment. Thanks! - Ric

I have been working with raptors for over 30 years, (buteo's accipiters and falcons) and have never seen and raptor cash any prey. From my experience, I would go with a weasel, or a human using the scaup with poison to kill raptors.
Being that its up at least 40 ft and no tracks were around, I would rule out humans. No weasels on the preserve property. We do have a resident coopershawk.
