Saturday at the SGA and the Wastewater

Nik Kalejz had ten people in attendance this morning for his annual DNR presentation of the Muskegon State Game Area and Muskegon County Wastewater Management System.  Prior to that meeting I birded the south side of the Maple River behind the headquarters building finding 23 bird species

Song Sparrow singing

Birds of note included Hermit Thrush (the first one I've ever heard singing in Muskegon County), Wild Turkey, Sandhill Crane, Belted Kingfisher, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Phoebe and Golden-crowned Kinglet

Later at the Wastewater I recorded Year Birds #74 Lesser Black-backed Gull and #75 Blue-winged Teal (considerably behind Charlie's #89 posted below).  At 12:30 more than 150 Sandhill Cranes flew high over the Laketon-Seba intersection, many of them calling as they headed north.

I also enjoyed the company of Lizzy Kibbey's Grand Rapids Audubon group (Steve Minard, James Fyfe, Ed and Katie Bolt, et. al.). The LBBG was "free" in one of their scopes, and their gang seems to have as much fun enjoying each others' company as we do. Hope to see you guys in the field again soon!
